Norris Rebuffs Piastri's Grievances Regarding Singapore GP Overtaking Move
The McLaren driver delivered a resolute reply toward the criticisms from his fellow driver Piastri following their contact at the Singapore GP, asserting how any racer that would avoid a similar overtake should not compete in F1.
On-Track Clash Sparks Internal Conflict
The race at the Marina Bay circuit was won for Mercedes George Russell, however was marked due to the contact in the opening corners, where Lando Norris attacked Piastri and made contact with his teammate following he had clipped the Red Bull of Max Verstappen in front.
Any driver in F1 would have done exactly the same move as I did, therefore if you fault me for just going on the inside of an opening then you do not deserve to race in F1,” Norris stated. It was completely fine with my actions.”
Championship Battle Intensifies
Norris and Piastri are in a direct battle for the drivers’ world championship, with the team claiming the constructors’ championship at the Singapore GP. Both drivers ended up third and fourth, with Norris reduced the points gap on his title rival down to 22 points and six meetings left.
Piastri was furious at the time, decrying that it was wrong for the team would not intervene to make Norris return the place since he felt Norris had pushed Piastri off the line. Nonetheless, the stewards issued no penalty.
Driver's Explanation
“I misjudged somewhat the proximity I was to Max, however that is racing plus I would have ended up in front of Piastri regardless,” said Lando. I took the inside line so the last thing I want to do was to touch with Oscar. Given my title position I am in, I can't risk such a move compared to Piastri. Race officials considered it okay and the team did so too.”
Piastri's Response
Oscar Piastri said he would reserve judgment until the team held a debriefing. I have to examine at the video and carefully and form my conclusion then,” he said. This was the first lap, emotions are high and we're urged to voice our opinions on what happened. I expressed mine and we will discuss it in the future.”
McLaren Boss's Viewpoint
McLaren's boss Stella also stated the team would evaluate their strategy to managing both drivers. “We have to put the situation in perspective. It’s the comments of a driver in a Formula One car, there’s the heat of competition. The data we have is merely his point of view. As usual we'll hold a constructive discussion, move forward and improve.”
