No less than 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime

At least 64 civilians died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community members have described the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
