The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three vying for the role of Irish president, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, Sunday night he stated in a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to leave the presidential election contest immediately and return to the arms of my family," he stated in his announcement.
