Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Context of Sentencing

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
