Football Recap: Denver Stage Late Comeback Against Eagles, Ravens Suffer Record Home-field Defeat
Broncos Overcome Eagles in Thrilling Finish
Bo Nix connected with an 11-yard touchdown pass and JK Dobbins added a two-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter as the Broncos erased a two-touchdown disadvantage to hand the Philadelphia Eagles their initial defeat of the season. Denver's defense deflected the Eagles quarterback's last-gasp attempt on the game's concluding play to send the Super Bowl champions to just their second defeat in their previous 22 outings. The Broncos (three wins and two losses) caught a huge break in their rally when the Eagles had a late fourth-down conversion nullified on a formation infraction whistled against running back Saquon Barkley.
Houston Texans 44–10 Baltimore Ravens
Houston's quarterback threw for 244 yards and four scoring throws, and the Texans (2-3) cruised to a decisive victory over an injury-ravaged Ravens squad, equaling both the biggest away victory in Texans' history and the worst home defeat in Baltimore's annals. The Ravens (1-4) were missing star signal-caller Jackson, and that was far from their only problem. Key defenders Kyle Hamilton, Roquan Smith and Marlon Humphrey all were absent, and the Ravens already were weakened on that side of the ball because of a neck problem that ended Nnamdi Madubuike's campaign. Baltimore were also missing All-Pro fullback Patrick Ricard and offensive lineman Stanley.
Las Vegas Raiders 6–40 Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis' running back scored three rushing scores and a two-point conversion, and the quarterback passed for two scoring throws as the Colts routed the Las Vegas Raiders. This decisive advantage was Indianapolis' largest since the 2013 season. The quarterback finished 20 of 29 for 212 passing yards and moved to 4-1 as the starting quarterback this year, exceeding his combined victory total over the past two seasons with the Giants. The running back rushed 17 attempts for 66 yards and grabbed three passes for 20 yards. Indianapolis turned multiple takeaways into TDs. The Raiders fell to 4-1.
Dallas Cowboys 37-22 New York Jets
Dallas' quarterback passed for four touchdown passes, leading the Dallas Cowboys to a comfortable win over the New York Jets. Dallas put points on the board on two long marches in the second period, despite being without key linemen on the offensive line. Javonte Williams gained 135 rushing yards and a score and also hauled in a TD pass. The Cowboys, now two wins, two losses, and a tie, bounced back from a 40-40 tie against Green Bay last Sunday. The Jets are still without a victory at zero wins and five losses in their new coach's inaugural year as the leader.
Minnesota Vikings 21–17 Cleveland Browns
Minnesota wideout Addison caught a short touchdown pass from the quarterback with 25 seconds left to secure Minnesota victory over the Browns at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This methodical march gave the Vikings (three wins and two losses) a much-needed win on their overseas journey, which began with a 24-21 loss to the Steelers in Ireland last Sunday. It also spoiled the rookie's first NFL start, as the Cleveland first-year player positioned his squad (1-4) in position to win by passing for two scores. Fellow rookie Quinshon Judkins rushed for 110 rushing yards on 23 carries. Wentz shook off an arm issue that temporarily forced him out and led two scoring drives in the latter half.
Miami Dolphins 24-27 Carolina Panthers
Carolina's quarterback threw for two touchdowns and the running back ran for 206 rushing yards and a score as the Panthers rallied past the Miami Dolphins in Charlotte. The quarterback's short pass to the first-year receiver with 1:59 to play gave the Panthers (two wins and three losses) the lead for good as they matched the largest comeback to win a game in franchise history by erasing a 17-point hole. Young had a horrific first quarter, but he ended up 19-for-30 passing for 198 passing yards with an interception. Dowdle, replacing injured Chuba Hubbard, did his damage on the ground on 23 carries, coming up four yards shy of the single-game franchise rushing record. The Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa threw 27 passes out of 36 for 256 passing yards with three scores and receiver Waddle gained 110 receiving yards on six receptions and scored a touchdown, but the Dolphins (1-4) dropped to zero wins and three losses in road games.
Saints Secure First Win Under New Coach
New Orleans' quarterback threw an 87-yard score to receiver Shaheed, defensive back Howden returned a fumble 86 yards for a score, and the Saints defeated the turnover-prone New York Giants for the New Orleans' initial win under rookie coach Kellen Moore. The QB secured his first victory in 11 professional starts, throwing for 225 passing yards without any mistakes. Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart, who won his first career start last week, threw for 202 passing yards and two scores, but also turned the ball over on three occasions. New York gave up possession on five separate plays in all, none more costly than when Bryan Bresee stripped running back Cam Skattebo, resulting in Howden's touchdown. Both teams are 1-4.
