Football Association of Ireland Passes Resolution Seeking European Football Ban on Israel
The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to submit a formal motion to Uefa, demanding the banning of Israeli football from continental club and international tournaments.
Basis of the Proposed Ban
This motion, that had been proposed by Dublin club Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of two important European football regulations.
- Inability to implement and enforce an proper anti-racism policy.
- Establishment of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories without the approval of the Palestrian FA.
Vote Outcome and Future Actions
As stated in an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was supported by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 abstentions.
The association plans to formally submit this request to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the prompt ban of the IFA from European tournaments.
During a special assembly of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to members. It was approved by a majority.
Previous Uefa Deliberations
Uefa had earlier paused plans to ban Israeli football at the end of September, following the revealing of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.
Although Uefa never officially confirmed considering an special session on the matter, plans were believed to be quite advanced.
Global Backdrop
This Irish resolution follows comparable calls in September from the leaders of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for Israel's suspension from international competition.
Those requests were made after UN specialists urged Fifa and Uefa to ban Israel, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed the country of committing genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has denied these claims and described the report as outrageous.
Potential Consequences
Should Uefa decide to suspend the IFA, it would likely create tension with the United States government – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an measure.
Although Uefa has the authority to suspend Israel or its clubs from its tournaments, it might not be able to prevent them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by world football's governing body.
