Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Squad While McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team selection update

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Irish team for the autumn internationals, however lock McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player group, however Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third fly-half selected as the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has started two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
